May 11, Kansas City –
This was another game this season where Bay led in possession time but was unable to get three points. Bay FC dropped their second straight game on Sunday morning vs the KC Current 4-1. This match was significantly different than last week’s loss to the San Diego Wave, who scored in the final minutes of extra time for the win.

“Sounds crazy, I’d rather lose like this than we did last weekend,” coach Albertin Montoya said.

Kansas City’s first goal was scored off a turnover less than three minutes into the match. Jordan Silkowitz’s pass was intercepted by Hailie Mace, who sent it ahead to Bia Zaneratto for the score.

The second goal gained momentum off another intercepted pass from Kiki Pickett heading towards Penelope Hocking. Midfield Claire Hutton sent a go-ball to Debinha who had a 1v1 matchup with Silkowitz and scored in the bottom right corner.

Debinha scores her second goal of the afternoon off a penalty into the top left corner of the goal. Silkowitz shouted at her line prior to the kick to slide over, yet it was not enough to give her the space she needed.

Kansas City ended the half with 11 shots on goal to Bay’s two.

Bay FC resumed to their offensive form of play for the second half and converted a corner kick into a goal, credited to Hocking. Bay has averaged one goal per game before Sunday and have adjusted the lineups defensively the last few weeks to match up to their opponents.

“Today we knew we were going to take a risk and play into a bigger shape,” said head Coach Albertin Montoya. “The last couple of games we’ve been a bit more defensive mindset, and we knew that this would be a difficult game. This is the mentality we’re going to have, our players enjoy playing this type of football, and we just have to be a little bit cleaner on keeping the ball.”

Bay fall to 12th in the NWSL standings with eight points, ten points behind the Current.

Hocking said the best way for Bay to get things back on track is to focus on the clubs confidence. “I feel like we’ve lacked a lot of confidence, like turning the ball over. We’ve gotta work on getting that back and completing our passes and playing on the front foot. It’s in our control.”

Bay FC return home to face Angel City (4-2-2) on Saturday evening in front of their home fans. The club will celebrate AANHPI Heritage night alongside the match, with the first 5,000 fans in attendance will receiving a commemorative poster designed by a local artist. (Bay FC)
