Was The Patriots Draft Good?

Last year’s Patriots draft received positive reviews, with many praising picks like Polk and Javon Baker. However, Baker never took the field, and Polk did not perform well. Additionally, Layden Robinson, an offensive lineman, and Caden Wallace were disappointing. Overall, there was little progress made following the draft, and most of the hype turned out to be just talk. Eliot Wolf acknowledged that last year’s strategy lacked direction, but he noted that there is a clearer direction this year.

Eliot Wolf thought the vision was clearer this year

I just think the whole vision for the team was really good. Not that we didn’t have that last year, or with Bill [Belichick] previously, but there was a lot of clear communication between [Mike] Vrabel and our staff. He was around a lot in our meetings. It was just a really good process. I would say, as the guys are still working on it right now, hopefully they’re closing some of these undrafted free agent deals out, and this is on me from last year. We just didn’t have an organized enough process, and Ryan Cowden and Coach Vrabel and Stretch [John Streicher] really came in and helped me organize this. I think we’re going to have a productive group.

Wolf acknowledges that there was better leadership under Vrabel and his staff compared to Mayo and his staff. The reason for this is that Mayo had a group of first-year executives and coordinators who were brought in from various backgrounds, which set him up for failure from the beginning. Last year, there was a lack of direction, and despite all the hype surrounding the offensive draft picks, the only significant player they acquired was Drake Maye. The rest of the picks were disappointing, and it’s unlikely that Polk and Baker will make the team this year.

The Patriots were able to draft their left tackle, Will Campbell, and then selected their running back in the second round. They also picked Kyle Williams in the third round, but it’s uncertain whether he will be successful. Nevertheless, much like last year, Wolf is pleased with the selections.

Sure. TreVeyon Henderson had a great career in high school. He’s a five-star running back coming out of Virginia. Continued onto Ohio State, started as a true freshman, played there for four years. Extremely productive player, extremely good speed, pass protection, pass game. Although he’s a little bit undersized, we view him as a three-down back and a really good compliment. He’s a threat with the ball in his hands, speed to take at the distance anytime he touches it.

Kyle Williams started his career at UNLV, ended up at Washington State, had a really productive junior year when Cam Ward was quarterback there, and then continued that on this year. He’s fast, can play outside and inside, really good with the ball in his hands. For an undersized guy, he’s really tough. He doesn’t shy away from anything. He can block. Had the opportunity to visit with him on his 30 visit here, and he really has a great personality, and we’re excited about what he’s going to add from that perspective.

Eliot Wolf had high praise for both players. Let’s see if that translates onto the field. They didn’t draft a quarterback because Drake was unhappy about the Milton signing last year. It’s understandable; this is his team, and some of these spoiled fans need a reality check— not everyone is Tom Brady. Drake is the future, and no one should stand in his way. As for the draft picks, the grades they are receiving should improve their performance on the field.
