We have made it to the NBA All-Star Weekend. The halfway point is a chance for teams and players to rest a bit, reset, finish the season strong, and get new pieces added at the deadline more comfortable. The Bay will host all the events and we can only pray this new All-Star format works for the shake of the league and us as fans. It won’t take long after the break to see who is real and who is just a feel-good story as the games start getting tight with seeding. Looking back at the first half and some storylines that I am keeping an eye on in the 2nd half.

We See You:

The Detriot Pistons have a lot to be excited about with more to come. Sitting three games over .500 at 29-26 and in the No. 6 spot in the Eastern Conference and have more than doubled last season’s 14 wins with 27 games still ahead of them. They’re 18-9 over their last 27 games and are still without Jaden Ivey who is 2nd on the team in scoring. Cade Cunningham is an All-Star and has people talking positively about the Pistons.

What is happening in Milwaukee? Two players who are top 25 in the league and have a decent roster, along with an NBA Champion head coach. They are sitting at 5th in the east and have been super inconsistent. Is adding Kyle Kuzma enough to get things on track for a team with high expectations?

Things could get ugly QUICK on Dallas for the Mavericks. We all know they traded all-world talent Luka Doncic which is still insane to me, now everyone is getting hurt. Anthony Davis wanted to show the world he was the man and could fill the role. Visions of Kyrie Irving and AD being a great 1-2 punch. But hold that thought Davis is out with an injury along with Daniel Gafford. From a PR standpoint they need some good things to happen asap, and on the floor what lineups can coach Jason Kidd figure it out?

Remember Us?

With all the noise around the league daily it is easy to forget teams and miss important moments. During the All-Star break take a look at the Denver Nuggets. They sit 3rd in the west, have an 8-game winning streak and Jamal Murray looks like bubble Murray. It is the year 2025 and we still do not have anyone who can handle the Joker and all the things he brings to the floor. This team still has championship DNA and can give teams matchup problems. But since it’s Denver no one is really talking about them and that is just how Mike Malone and his team want it.

The All-Star weekend couldn’t come fast enough for the Orlando Magic as injuries and bad luck have jumbled up their season. How will they end it? Coach Mosley and crew need this time to figure out what’s next. You have two studs in Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner and an all-defensive team member in Jalen Suggs. They sit at the number 7 spot and with the east so mushed there is ZERO reason to throw in the towel just need some good bounces and health.

Is It Real?

Two teams that have strong fan bases but outside of them other people aren’t too sure of are the New York Knicks, and Oklahoma City Thunder. You have heard the saying when the Knicks are good it is good for the NBA and I believe that to be true. Currently sitting 3rd in the east with the defending champs and solid Cavs team ahead of them. I can’t get too hyped about the Knicks when you look at their record versus the top teams in the NBA. A deep playoff run is very possible but do they have enough to go toe-to-toe with the big dogs? The return of Mitchell Robinson should help on the defensive end. Karl Anthony Towns is having a monster year and making Timberwolves fans sick.

They are young and fun and probably will be at all the NBA All-Star Weekend parties but OKC is legit. I love the AAU vibes in the post-game interviews and how tight-knit they seem. On the floor, they have an NBA contender in SGA and Jalen Williams is an emerging number 2 option and they have so much good depth. Add the unicorn Chet Holmgren and they give other teams a ton of problems. This team has playoff experience and also is not afraid to dig in on the defensive side of the court. From the start of the season, they have been one of the top teams handling injuries and are poised to do something special. Once they get to full strength and get games under their belt the rest of the NBA should be very afraid.

Enjoy the show which is the NBA All-Star Weekend. Looking forward to the sprint towards the playoffs and seeing what happens next. What are some of the teams/players you are keeping an eye on in the 2nd half? Let me know in the comments or find me on X @JoeCardoso301

Joe Cardoso

Joe Cardoso here! I’m the epitome of a sports junkie. An alum of the College of Southern Maryland, I received a diploma from the Maryland Institute of Broadcasting (MIB). During my tenure at MIB, I was a news/sports major and had the opportunity to intern at Fox 45 sports and Ravens Radio. I also worked as an overnight board operator for Sports Talk 980 ESPN Radio. I’ve been a total sports fanatic pretty much from the womb. My first love is soccer followed by basketball and then football. My favorite athletes are Kevin Garnett and Marino Rivera and my sports teams are the Yankees, Commanders, Michigan, Wizards, and Chelsea. My passion for sports is never ending. My sister once commented that I would probably follow pig racing if it was a sport!
