In the beginning stages of The Rookie, John Nolan and Lucy Chen were a secret item. But did anyone know this? How have they kept it a secret for so long? There was a feeling that Jackson West possibly knew, and if he did, he literally took that info to the grace. As much as they love to joke with each other on The Rookie, can viewers recall a time when the jokes have flown in their direction?
John is now married to Bailey. By the end of Season 5, Tim and Lucy finally decided to take their feelings to the next level until Tim proved how much of an ass he is by dumping Lucy. But still, why have the writers hid that info from the rest of the characters?
Lucy was a bit of a rebel as a rookie and John was just trying to feel a bit younger. So, in a weird type of way, their hookup made perfect sense. However, it’s like it never happened, and for all the comedic scenes in The Rookie, this would have made for some great jokes.
What Happened To John and Lucy On The Rookie
Then you add in the fact that Jon and Lucy have proceeded as if it never happened, the viewers were robbed of a great storyline. How would Tim feel around John and Lucy and how would Bailey feel around the two of them?
Keeping them a couple never made sense. There was no way they could work. John was too grounded while Lucy was a free spirit. Over the seasons she has found her place but it was clear the first time we saw them together, they weren’t endgame.
The age gap was too big and while that may not have seemed like a bad thing in today’s society, it just wouldn’t work for this show. The majority of the cast is too young and somehow, the writers would have squeezed in a storyline that would have put Tim and Lucy together with a possible cheating scandal that would have divided The Precient.
It’s clear that Lucy and Chen was the better storyline but what was the purpose of beginning The Rookie with such a colossal fail? It’s not the point that the relationship ended, it’s that it was rolled up in a rug and thrown in the attic never to be spoken of again.
