Lookout Colorado Springs, a new sushi chain is sweeping the area by storm!
On March 7th 2024 Awi Sushi opened its 3rd location in town. They are located on Nevada Avenue, Tejon Street, and now Interquest Parkway. I stopped in on opening day for dinner and picked up 3 different rolls to try.
The first of which is the Avalanche roll. This was a baked roll since I am not a fan of raw sushi/sashimi. Inside the roll was shrimp and crab, with avocado and cucumber, while the outside was topped with baked scallops and their secret baked sauce. I rate this roll a 4 out of 5, the baked sauce is very sweet, but overall a tasty roll.
Now, the Dynamite Roll….was my least favorite of all the things I tried on this trip. Another baked roll , this time the inside consisted of crab, avocado, and cucumber, and was topped with white fish, crab, and spicy mayo. The roll was bland, and topped in so much white fish it was very difficult to eat. I would give this roll a 3 out of 10, still very fresh fish, just not as impressive of flavor.
Ok, but the Spicy California Roll was definitely my favorite! Simple, has just the right spice level, and an amazing ratio of filling. It’s your classic Cali Roll with a spicy twist, made up of spicy crab, avocado, cucumber, and spicy mayo drizzled on top. 5 out of 5 for this roll. I’ve been craving it ever since!
All of the staff was friendly and the food was fresh tasting, and easy on the bank account. Prices start as low as $4.99 for basic rolls, and increase in a tier-style menu, with the most expensive tier being $11.99 per roll. My total was $26.89.
Oh and as a bonus for all my fellow Gluten Free or Celiac friends, all but a handful of their rolls (tempura fried), can be made gluten-free! They are very accommodating to restrictions and have lots of options for everyone who stops by.
Overall I enjoyed their food, attitude, and atmosphere, and will for sure be back soon. If you like sushi and are local, I highly recommend Awi Sushi the next time you’ve got a hankering for something yummy!
