If you’re a fan of All American and All American: Homecoming, the word Vortex has come up a lot. But what exactly is the Vortex? It’s a term that was given to the Beverly/Crenshaw High crew by Jaymee. At the time, she was new to the high school/college friends circle but she did sense weird energy in the group, thus labeling them the Vortex.
The Vortex for All American is simple, yet complicated. Almost everyone (minus JJ) has been in a relationship with at least one other person in the group. And while they all still hang out, live together, and work together, the synergy between them all is also dangerous. Most of the fights that occur on All American, or All American Homecoming, are with themselves.

Asher dated Layla and Olivia.
Jordan dated Simone (married), and now he’s dating Layla
Coop dated Precious
Spencer dated Layla and now he’s back with Liv
When you look at it from the outside looking in, it all seems messy. But wait, that’s not the end of it. The kids are not the only ones involved here.
Billy Baker slept with Grace who was dating his best friend Corey at the time back in High School.
You want your relationship to be great and yet, for reasons you cannot figure out, you end up in the same conversation or with the same fights over and over again. We call this The Relationship Vortex – it is the place where your deepest hurts touch your partners deepest hurts and their deepest hurts touch yours.
Now, within that Romantic Vortex is still the friend aspect. No matter how hard they fight, they always seem to come back to the beginning. Imagine being Patience and dating Coop but pouring your heart out to Spencer after a fight. As friends, this shouldn’t be a problem, but remember, Coop and Spencer have been best friends since birth. The same goes for Layla and Olivia. They dated the same 2 guys and now Layla is dating Liv’s twin brother. And yet, they managed to get back to their best friend zone. It took a while, but they’re there. And then to add more fuel to the fire, all the females in the Vortex live together. Jaymee now lives at the Beach House with the guys.

On the parental side of the coin stands Spencer, Grace, Billy, and Laura. There was an affair (or whatever) and there was Spencer staying in the Baker’s house as if it never happened. Now, Grace and Laura are like sisters. Strange, right?
Backtracking, it seems that really weird. Well, it’s weird if you never had a tight-knit circle of friends like that before in your life. All they know is each other because they KNOW each other. There is no room for strangers at this moment. Jaymee got in because she fit in. Alicia couldn’t make it in the circle because the Vortex has a hold of Spencer. Almost everyone has tried an outside relationship and they all have failed.
The Vortex is weird but it’s not weird at the same time. Sometimes in life, you find your circle and you hold tight to them. There will be moments when a bond might be broken, but if it’s meant to be, you will find your way back. The Vortex on All America is what it is. So much so that Patience titled her debut album–The Vortex.
