When we first started this “Dream Chasers” series the goal was and still is to highlight people who have a dream and are fighting to reach it while inspiring people along the way. We all could use a boost from time to time to get past those rough patches or a spark to finally take the leap and go for it. As we roll through 2023 we have the opportunity to meet a young lady who is putting herself out there and chasing her dream as well as figuring out which one is next to conquer. We go to North Carolina and introduce Kelly An Huynh aka the “ChunkIPanda”
Joe Cardoso: Let’s talk music! Where did the passion come from?
Kelly Huynh: I’ve always been enamored with music since my earliest memories. As a child, I dreamt of gracing the stage as an artist and entertainer, captivating audiences with my voice and presence. Music has been my constant companion, my way of expressing joy, sorrow, and even anger. I find solace and inspiration in the works of some incredible artists, such as Adele, Alicia Keys, and Sam Smith, who have shown me the power of music to touch hearts and souls.
JC: What’s your secret to being able to grab a mic, hop on stage and crush it?
KH: To be completely honest, it’s always petrifying. No matter how many times I’ve been on stage, the nerves never seem to disappear. The key for me is to let the music flow through me. I try to immerse myself in the songs, allowing their stories and emotions to take the lead. The energy from the crowd also fuels me.
JC: You don’t mess around with fitness. What is a typical workout week look like for you?
KH: Indeed, fitness is an integral part of my life, as it not only helps me maintain my physical health but also supports my mental well-being. A typical workout week for me consists of 5-6 days of exercise, with at least 1-2 rest days incorporated, depending on the intensity of my training schedule.
JC: The real changes are made in the kitchen what’s your approach to diet?
KH: My approach to diet is all about balance and moderation. I believe that making real, lasting changes comes from adopting sustainable eating habits rather than following restrictive diets. For me, this involves cooking more at home and being mindful of the ingredients I use, while also leaving room to enjoy the occasional indulgence when dining out.
JC: Being a true jack of all trades how did you start modeling?
KH: My journey into modeling began rather unexpectedly, all thanks to a dear friend who saw potential in me and encouraged me to give it a try. Initially, I was hesitant and unsure but nudged me out of my comfort zone, and I decided to take the experiment. Modeling has played a significant role in building my self-confidence. Through modeling, I have learned to embrace my unique features and express myself in ways I never thought possible. It has taught me the importance of self-acceptance and how to carry myself with grace and poise. The experience has been transformative, and I am excited to continue growing and evolving.
JC: We are living in some crazy times but based on your socials you are so positive. How do you get through the rough times?
KH: For me, the key to staying optimistic and resilient during rough times lies in practicing gratitude. By focusing on the blessings and abundance in my life, rather than dwelling on what’s missing, I am able to cultivate a more positive mindset and better cope with life’s adversities. I have always had a strong connection with people and a deep passion for spreading love and joy. This innate desire to uplift others, to make their day brighter, or to offer support in difficult moments, truly fills my cup and nourishes my soul. I genuinely believe that by being a source of light and positivity, even in small ways, I can create a ripple effect.
JC: Family is important to you because____?
KH: Family is incredibly important to me because they are my pillars of support and strength. They are the people I was given at birth to learn from, heal with, and grow stronger alongside. Through life’s ups and downs, they provide me with unconditional love, guidance, and encouragement, fostering a deep sense of belonging and security.
My family has played a crucial role in shaping who I am today, instilling values and beliefs that have become integral to my character. They have taught me the importance of empathy, resilience, and determination, while also showing me the beauty of love, laughter, and togetherness.
JC: Before the end of 2023 what is ONE goal you have to reach.?
KH: Create and nurture a community that is centered on support, empowerment, and mutual growth. I envision a space where people from diverse backgrounds and experiences can come together, share their stories, and uplift one another. The aim is to foster a sense of belonging and camaraderie among members, encouraging everyone to pursue their dreams and overcome challenges with the knowledge that they are not alone.
Bonus Questions:
JC: Let’s talk Tats!! How many, and do you have a favorite?
KH: I have a total of 16 tattoos, and to be honest, each one of them is my favorite. They all hold a special place in my heart because they carry unique spiritual meanings for me. These tattoos serve as a form of self-expression, allowing me to share my beliefs, personal journey, and growth through art. One particular tattoo that resonates with me on a daily basis is Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy, inked on my forearm. Kuan Yin embodies compassion, and having her tattoo serves as a constant reminder for me to practice kindness and empathy in my daily interactions. This powerful symbol encourages me to approach life with an open heart and to always extend love and understanding to both myself and others.
JC: You didn’t think you would get by without having to explain your nickname! Spill it.
KH: Haha, I had a feeling this question would come up eventually! The story behind my nickname, “Chunkipanda,” is actually quite amusing. The “Chunki” part originated from my insatiable appetite and love for food. My friends would often tease me about always being found stuffing my face, and the name just stuck.
Over time, the meaning of “Chunki” has evolved to represent staying hungry for growth and improvement in all aspects of life. It’s about having an appetite for learning, pushing boundaries, and striving to be the best version of ourselves.
As for the “Panda” part, I’ve been obsessed with pandas for as long as I can remember. They’re adorable, lovable, and universally adored creatures. Thus, the two parts came together to form “Chunkipanda.”
What started as a playful nickname has now become a symbol for anyone who’s passionate about pursuing their dreams and bettering themselves in whatever their heart desires. It’s about embracing life with enthusiasm, curiosity, and an unwavering determination to keep growing and evolving.
