It’s out with the old and in with the new. Here’s a look at the rest of the guys tugging on their capes, and their leader Patrick Mahomes. This happens all the time in the NFL, but this is different across the league. Most teams have a guy under 30 under center now. The oldest quarterbacks still manning the helms are, of course, Tom Brady, 45/46 (if he returns next year). Next on the list is, of course, Aaron Rodgers, currently 39. They are the old guys trying to hold on to the top.
The New Regime
The leaders of the new school. Here is the rundown of the top quarterbacks currently under 30. At the top of the list is Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. The Chiefs drafted Mahomes with the tenth overall pick in the first round of the 2017 NFL draft. At only 27 Mahomes has established Hall of Fame-worthy accolades. Mahomes has already won a super bowl and been to another. He was the super bowl 54 MVP. In 2018 he was named the NFL’s MVP and the Offensive player of the year. In his rookie year, he threw for 5097 yards. This year he again crossed the 5000-yard mark with 5250. Mahomes in his rookie year threw 50 touchdowns. This year he hit 41 touchdowns. For his career, he has 192 touchdowns and only 49 interceptions. In five years as the starter, Mahomes has 24,241 yards. Mahomes owns the NFL record for the most yards through 50 career starts for quarterbacks. It only took Mahomes 47 starts to break the previous record held by Hall of Famer Kurt Warner. He has been rewarded too, Mahomes signed a 12-year extension with the Chiefs worth up to $503 million. That is the biggest quarterbacks contract in NFL history.
Regular Season
What Mahomes has done over the last five years is remarkable. He has been so good that we have become, is it numb or blind to his greatness? Mahomes is redefining the gold standard of what it means to be among “The Best” quarterbacks in the NFL. Not only has he mastered the routine throws but he is a “Magician” at creating new ways to pass the ball. Mahomes has played in 80 regular season games. His record is 64-16. For his career, his completion percentage is 66.3%. Breaking down his record month to month starting with September 13-3, October 13-7, November 15-2, and in December, he is downright dominant at 20-3! There’s just something different about the way his competitiveness seems to increase as the games increase in importance.
Playoffs
The legacy continues to grow as Mahomes’s record in the playoffs is 10-3. Mahomes has been a starter for five seasons. In those five seasons, he has taken his Chiefs team to five consecutive AFC championship games. Where he has a 3-2 record. Mahomes is the first quarterback to lead his team to five conference title games before the age of 30. Last week’s AFC title game was a rematch of last year’s which was the Cincinnati Bengals facing the Kansas City Chiefs. Mahomes added to his mystique by playing thru a high ankle sprain he suffered in the divisional round against the Jacksonville Jaguars the week prior. Mahomes wanted the rematch with the Bengals. Now he’s set to make his third super bowl in four years. Mahomes is making his way toward the path laid by Tom Brady. If he can win his second super bowl he would be on pace to catch Brady in his 30s!?
What Mahomes is doing really hasn’t been seen or done before. At least not on a football field. His name and likeness are becoming iconic to where he’s as marketable for the NFL as Michael Jordan was for the NBA. The way he has taken the league by storm and kind of changed the game while establishing a regime that may just be a dynasty forming. Sound familiar I believe that’s what “They’re” saying about Golden States Steph Curry. Let’s take this another step further Mahomes is on his way to becoming the NFL’s version of Lebron James. Mahomes will be one of the greatest quarterbacks if not players ever in NFL history.
