Roman Reigns has been in the WWE since 2012, when he, Seth Rollins, and Dean Ambrose debuted the Shield at TLC 2012. In 10 years, he has held the WWE Championship four times, the WWE Universal Championship two times, the WWE Intercontinental Championship, the WWE US title, and the WWE tag titles. As of this current writing, Roman Reigns currently holds both the WWE Championship and the WWE Universal Championship. He has held the WWE Universal Championship for over 828 days. He currently holds the WWE Championship for over 244 days. We have not seen a wrestler have a run with either belt in a very long time like Roman Reigns is having.
As we have seen with the likes of John Cena, Bruno Sammartino, Pedro Morales, and others who have held the title; there is always someone who ends the long run. I will be looking at who should dethrone Roman Reigns for both titles, and it makes sense. As we turn the calendar into 2023, wrestling fans know it as the road to WrestleMania. The first stop is the Royal Rumble. This would be the event that I would have him drop the WWE Championship. I’m saying for him to drop this title here because he hasn’t really done anything for it. I could see several superstars going for it.
The one who I feel should dethrone him for the WWE Championship is Kevin Owens. For starters, it will be nice having a champion appear on Monday Night Raw on a weekly basis. I’m not saying you need to have your main champion work a match every week. But the fact that Roman Reigns is on Raw once every couple of weeks to boost a rating isn’t good. I know the plan was to have Roman Reigns work both shows after winning the winner’s take-all match at WrestleMania. But as we have seen that is not the case.
Now that he has dropped the title to Kevin Owens, we have to look at who should take the WWE Universal championship off of him. I feel there are two possible names who I could see winning the title from Roman Reigns. One is a name that people have been talking about for some time and that is Cody Rhodes. He is very rightfully so. It would make a great story between two of the biggest wrestling families in the world.
But I would also like to see Bron Breaker be one to dethrone Roman Reigns for the WWE Universal title. As of this writing, Bron currently holds the NXT title. However, I doubt he will be holding the title much longer as he has shown he is main roster ready. I also wouldn’t mind seeing this because when have seen the WWE actually make a star. They tried that with Austin Theory, and it was due to Triple H that he is getting a push. The other reason is that you look at the future main event stars and it’s not a lot of guys.
AEW has several guys who are going to be the main event level for years to come. In the world of WWE, you don’t have many who can be put in that main event spot.
