The Green Bay Packers lost to the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday night, 40-33. Green Bay is now 4-8 on the season and will not make the playoffs. In order for the Packers to qualify for the post-season, they would have to win 5 straight games. That is not happening. Aaron Rodgers left the game against the Eagles with an apparent rib injury. Jordan Love came in and was 6/9 for 113 yards and threw 1 touchdown pass. It is now time for the Packers to play their backup for the rest of the season.
Green Bay drafted Love in 2020 with the 26th overall pick. Here is a list of offensive players who were drafted after Love.
- Clyde Edwards-Helaire, RB Chiefs
- Tee Higgins, WR Bengals
- Jonathan Taylor, RB Colts
- Chase Claypool, WR Bears
- Jalen Hurts, QB Eagles
This team is at a crossroads. They have to see if Love can play, if he should be traded, or if he is the future. This is not an indictment on Aaron. He has completed 64% of his passes, has 21 touchdowns and, 9 interceptions. But some of the offensive struggles are on him. Rodgers chose not to work with his new WR in the off-season and chose not to play one snap in pre-season to establish chemistry.
It is now time to give the playbook to Love and see if he is a future starter or career backup. There is no reason for Rodgers to play. Best, case scenario, Love plays well and they can trade him for picks or players. Rodgers signed a 3-year, $150,815,000 contract with the Green Bay Packers, including a $40,800,000 signing bonus, $150,815,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $50,271,667. For the next 2 years, he is the starter.
