You won’t find too many things that are still around and enjoyed from 1938 but that’s just what the Addams Family is to pop culture. The reboot in 2022 comes in the form of Wednesday the new Netflix series, that focuses on Wednesday Addams and her high school years. With movies like Bettle Juice, Edward Sissorcorhands, and The Nightmare Before Christmas this is gothic family is perfect for director Tim Burton. The cast is really well put together with names we know like Christina Ricci who played the character in the 90s and, Catherine Zeta-Jones along with Luis Guzmán. But hands down the star of the show is Jenna Ortega. Wednesday Addams is smart, sarcastic, and a little dead inside.
Taking place at Nevermore Academy a school for social outcasts students are everything from werewolves to sirens and good old-fashioned weirdos. Fast-paced episodes do a good job of doing two things one keeping you guessing in this murder mystery and two, letting us get to know more about these characters along the way. Have I mentioned how Ortega kills it? From her killer looks to the one-liners that anyone who lives and dies by their sarcasm will love. She is all in for each scene and you see the growth of the character something we don’t see with a lot of Netflix shows. This is definitely one of those series you can hit play and will find hard to quit.
It wouldn’t be a coming-of-age show without some life lessons sprinkled in it which it does but nothing that beats you over the head. One of the best moments of the show is the “Rave’N Dance” where we see Wednesday bust out her dancing shoes and a look I’m sure many will try and copy at schools across the country. Good luck with that parents! What makes it even funnier and cooler is the whole dance is off the top of her head! The team that brought you Smallville is behind the writing and I call that a win.
Overall this show is worth your time and a solid binge it doesn’t take itself too seriously and has room to grow. You also get to see a great new actress own a role and bring a new twist to an old character we all know. I hope they get a second season so we get more of the family and story. Thing and, uncle Fester only give us a small sample of what they are all about.
If you are looking for something fun and different before the wave of holiday movies I would put this on your list. Now, the question becomes will we see a season 2? For our reviews here at Team NBS Media, we won’t be using tomatoes or stars we are going with everyone’s favorite snack popcorn. I give Wednesday solid 🍿🍿🍿🍿buckets out of five.
