On Memorial Day, the Twins began a stretch of 8 games in 7 days, all on the road. They start will a five-game series in Detroit against the Tigers, who are at the bottom of the division. Meanwhile, the Twins remain in first place and have the 3rd best record in the American league at 29-20. That’s four and a half games up on the second-place Chicago White Sox. Minnesota is barely in the top ten in the power rankings coming in at 9.
Boy, the hits just keep on coming and not the good kind; the injury bug continues to plague the club as they have added Royce Lewis to the ten-day IL, P Sonny Gray is day to day with pectoral soreness RF Max Kepler will miss Monday as well with quadriceps’ issues. On Saturday, P Danny Coulombe was put on the 15-day DL with left hip impingement. On May 26th, P Jorge Alcala was put on the 60 IL dealing with his elbow; on the 25th, P Joe Ryan was placed on the covid list. P Cody Stashak was put on the 15-day IL on the 22nd due to shoulder impingement. Newly acquired just at the end of spring training, P Chris Paddack is already done for the year and has undergone Tommy John surgery for his elbow. On May 14th Miguel Sano was sidelined with a meniscus tear in his knee for 60 days IL. May 11 saw Jhon Romero land on the 60-day IL with biceps problems. May has definitely been a month. The Twins are taking part in a doubleheader against the Tigers. The first game resulted in an 8-2 win the starting pitcher was Devin Smeltzer who is 1-0 with a 1.04 ERA and a whip of just .081. He’ll be facing off against Rony Garcia of the Tigers. He has 0 wins, 0 losses, an ERA of 3.00, and a whip of .083. Max Kepler was rolling with three hits and three RBI. In the night game, the starters will be for the Twins. Cole Sands, who has 0-0 W-L, a 6.75 ERA whip, is 1.00 on the plus side in only four innings; for the Tigers will be Joey Wentz, who is 0-1 with a 20.25 ERA and a whip of 3.28 in just 2.2 innings. Two very unknown rookies will be taking the mound in the nightcap of the doubleheader. Luis Arraes continues to dazzle at the dish with his .360 batting average, third-best in the American League; even more impressive than that is his on-base percentage of .454, good for second-best in all of baseball. Byron Buxton leads the team in home runs from the leadoff spot in the lineup with 11. While Jorge Polanco keeps racking up the R.B.I’s with a club leading 26. After five games in Detroit, the team will travel to play the Toronto Blue Jays for three games.
