The New York Mets enter the week of May 23rd, 2022, with an impressive, 28-15 record. They are in 1st place in the National League East. They are leading the 2nd place Atlanta Braves by 8 games. It has been a great start to the season for New York. Did all that change last week when Max Scherzer left the game against the Saint Louis Cardinals? Scherzer is expected to miss six to eight weeks after suffering a “moderate to high grade” oblique strain.
Pete Alonso is having an MVP like season. He is hitting .280, with 10 homeruns and he is leading the national league with 37 RBI. Jeff McNeil has been a pleasant surprise in the field and at the plate. He is 5th in the national league in batting average. Francisco Lindor continues to struggle at the plate. He is only batting .239 but he has walked 21 times and is 2nd on the team with 24 RBI.
The Pitching staff has been phenomenal. Edwin Diaz is 3rd in saves with 10. He has 34 strikeouts in 18 innings and a 1.45 ERA.
Mets Pitchers:
- 3rd in runs allowed (3.5) per game.
- 2nd in strikeouts per 9 innings (9.42)
- 8th in ERA (3.41)
- 2nd in fielding percentage, 0.989
New York will have to go the next six weeks without Jacob deGrom and Scherzer. Two Cy Young Award winners can not be replaced. To make matters worse, the Mets face the San Francisco Giants and the Philadelphia Phillies this week. Both teams are top 10 in batting averages and home runs. It is very early in the season but how the Mets respond over the next 6-8 weeks could determine whether they make the post-season.
There is a different feel to this team and their fan base. They are confident and they are hopeful. For the first time in years, Mets fans are cautiously optimistic. So far, they have been fun to watch.
