The New York Mets enter this week with a 12-5 record. They have the most wins in the Major leagues.
This team is clicking on cylinders:
- Ranked 6th in runs per game, (4.8).
- Ranked 4th in hits per game, (8.6).
- Ranked 4th in team batting average, (.256).
- Ranked 3rd in stolen bases, (12).
- Ranked 4th in runs allowed, (2.9)
- Ranked 2nd in opposing batting average, (.197).
Buck Showalter has this team playing disciplined baseball on offense and defense. The Mets continue to create runs by moving the runners over, stealing bases and making productive outs. Pete Alonso and Francisco Lindor have 7 homeruns and 29 runs batting in. The two new acquisitions from the Oakland A’s, Starling Marte and Mark Cahna have been productive early on. Brandon Nimmo and Jeff McNeil have provided a spark as lead-off batters. They are both batting.302.
The pitching staff has been sensational without their two-time Cy Young Winner, Jacob deGrom. Max Scherzer and Tylor McGill have 6 wins in 7 starts. When deGrom gets back, this could be the best pitching staff in all of baseball.
Things to watch for:
There is no place on this team for Robinson Cano or Dominic Smith. Both are batting below .207. The Mets have World Series expectations. This team cannot have nonproductive players on their bench. Pitchers have thrown at the Mets batters in every series without any repercussions. This cannot continue. Eventually, New York will have to throw at their opponents.
