The New York Mets have a record of 7—3 and they are in 1st place in the NL East.
As a lifelong Mets fan, this team just feels different.
The season is still new, but Buck Showalter is establishing a climate of professionalism, accountability and there are certain trends that are starting to take place.
- Mets are 6th in runs (5.1) per game.
- 2nd in on base percentage (.358)
- 2nd in stolen bases
The last time the Mets finished in the top 12 in stolen bases was 2014. This is an organization that has never taken advantage of their team speed. That is changing this year.
Their pitching staff has been lights out. They are 2nd in runs allowed, and 2nd in opposing batting average, and teams are hitting .191 against the Mets.
Jeff McNeil, Mark Canha, and Travis Jankowski are all hitting over .340. Francisco Lindor has 3 HR’s and Pete Alonso has 14 RBI, 11 of those coming when he has been the Mets Designated Hitter.
This team has been fun to watch because they are playing “small ball” and manufacturing runs. They do not make a ton of mental errors in the field or on the base path. Buck has this team playing with confidence and with emotion. Something Mets fans haven’t seen in a very long time.
