After finishing first in the Western Conference in 2021, expectations from the Colorado Rapids fans are high coming into this season. The mood of this first Rapids Report, though, is low. In the season’s first fixture, Carlos Vela was back to his old self. He accounted for all three LAFC goals. It was also a measure of revenge for LAFC. The last time Colorado and LA faced, the Rapids won that game 5-2. The goal difference in this game was the same, but the Rapids were forced into a clean sheet.
For the most part, it was an even match between LAFC and Colorado. Possession was 50% each, both teams had 14 fouls, and Los Angeles walked had one more corner than Colorado. However, when it comes to shots on goal, LAFC dominated the match. Los Angeles had 15 totals for the match. Seven of those shots were on goal.
Conversely, the Rapids had seven total shots for the game. Only one of those shots was on goal. So, yes. There is work to be done up in the clouds of Colorado. With Cole Bassett being on loan in Europe and Kellyn Acosta traded to LAFC, there are some holes to fill for the Rapids.
The Colorado Rapids only have two postseason victories since winning the MLS Cup in 2010. Currently, FiveThirtyEight only gives them a 3% chance to take the MLS Cup this season. However, with up to $1.5 million in GAM available this season, Colorado has some moves it can make. With only one fixture as a small sample size, all of that $1.5 million GAM is needed to get this team on track.
