The Chicago Bulls, much like the New York Knicks now have a centerpiece to build around. With Zach LaVine taking his game to an All-Star level, this current Bulls team is in a Derrick Rose-like situation. He has the skills, but does he have the cast?
During the NBA Trade Deadline, the Bulls acquired the services of Center Nikola Vucevic but since, they have continued to fall down the standings. Viewed as a sure lock to make the playoffs, the Bulls cannot continue to slide or having an All-Star and a great offensive Center will be for nothing. This offseason, the Bulls will need to find a solid PG to form a Big 3 of sorts.
Although they’re mathematically still in the playoff picture, the Bulls do not have the necessary pieces to make a strong run with the likes of the Milwaukee Bucks, Brooklyn Nets, and the Philadelphia 76ers in the Eastern Conference. That’s why this offseason will be huge for them in terms of becoming one of those elite teams.
Adding a young playmaker in the draft is doable but what they need is a veteran player who has been there before to help guide the young rosters who have never sniffed the playoffs.
Chris Paul is an option but he’s also pushing 36 years old and will come with a hefty price tag. Another option is Kyle Lowry but will Toronto be willing to let him walk without throwing a ton of money his way? Spencer Dinwiddie is a cheaper option here but will he be at top form after his injury?
The Bulls have options but when it comes down to is direction. The reason the best teams in the league remain season after season is that they’re not afraid to take that gamble and throw money at certain players.
The Bulls have a scoring option on the wings with LaVine. They have a low post threat in Vucevic in the post. But what they need is a player who can bring it all together. He doesn’t have to be flashy, just productive.
The last capable PG the Bulls had was Derrick Rose. It’s time for the Bulls to begin thinking about the bigger picture. After years of being placed at the bottom of the Conference, things are beginning to look up. While winning is never easy and will take skill and luck, all this begins with the front office.
What’s the point of having two 20+point scorers on your team but not giving them the pieces needed to be contenders?
