Cowboys Corner: Dak is Back!

BREAKING NEWS:

The two year contract ordeal of the Dallas Cowboys and the face of the franchise quarterback DAK PRESCOTT, was finally concluded today with the sides agreeing to a 4 year $160 million dollar deal, including a record $126 million dollar in guaranteed money. The deal on paper will be extended to a six-year deal. That means the overall cap hit will actually fall to around 20 to 21 million.

That also means the Cowboys have flexibility in free agency. Yes this could have been done two years ago, it certainly could have been done in 2020, however, it’s finally done and the two sides did not wait until the very last minute. Sorry, Jerry, you’re whole deadlines make deals nonsense wasn’t necessary. Both sides are pleased, the Cowboys got flexibility on the salary cap side and Prescott gets both term and money he wanted.

We can argue about Prescott trailing only Mahomes in dollars another time. The MARKET bears what the market bears at the QB position, that’s it in the simplest of terms.

There will be a press conference on Wednesday in Frisco.

Looking Ahead:

Now the focus for the Cowboys can shift. There’s likely money to address a possible Safety, Offensive tackle, or maybe even a Corner in free agency. They could also find a way to bring in a veteran backup for Dak as well. The next most likely consideration has to be Michael Gallup’s future on this roster. I can’t see a big-money extension coming to him after this season. Therefore look for a trade where Dallas gets a late second or early third-round pick for Gallup. The ability to save over $12 million against the cap is a massive win for the Cowboys. One must also believe that Prescott realized he can’t do this alone and the team must be able to bring in more talent around him.

Offensive Tackles:

Don’t think you can go after the biggest names available here, but there’s plenty of depth guys that could be better than last year 3rd level guys who ended up forced into action because of injuries.

Safety:

Patrick Petersen his days at Corner are numbered, however, he can transition into a veteran safety presence and help Donovan Wilson and Trevon Diggs improve. A veteran leader that can contribute on and off the field.

Corner:

Bashaud Breeland from the Chiefs would be the number one target for me at Corner.

This will also depend on what the final salary cap figures will be. Guess what folks? We’re a week away from the new league year and NO ONE knows that number???

Here’s what matters, the Dallas Cowboys have cost certainty and the term for the Dak Prescott. That makes the Cowboys the legitimate front-runners in the NFC East as the Washington Football Team the Giants, and the Eagles are headed into 2021 with much lesser talent at the sports premier position.
