The 2018 FIFA World Cup is nearing the end and the semi-finals have become an All-European affair for only the fifth time in the tournament’s history.
France will be playing Belgium in what promises to be a great match. Both sides possess some of the most recognizable names in the sport. France disappointed somewhat in the group stages considering what was expected off their talented set of players, but their display in the matches against Argentina and Uruguay indicated that they finally got into their rhythm. Kylian Mbappe has exploded into the international scene with his performances in the knockouts stages.
Belgium, on the other hand, has play pretty much as a top team is expected. Their dramatic 3-2 win over Japan, followed by their 2-1 win over Brazil shows their ability. Against Japan, they responded after falling behind 2-0 down in the second half while they smothered Brazil. Romelu Lukaku and Kevin De Bruyne have ravaged defenses. While Thibaut Courtois, Jan Vertonghen and the rest of their backline have shut down all opposition.
Croatia had to survive two penalty shootouts to get to the semi-finals and that highlights the importance of the goalkeeper. Danijel Subasic was limping towards the end of their epic quarter-final match against Russia they will be hoping that it was only fatigue and nothing more serious. Luka Modric has been without doubt their standout outfield player but they need more from Mario Mandzukic and Ivan Rakitic.
England fans may be in party-mode, but their team has remain focus on the task at hand, as was evident from their efficient 2-0 win over Sweden. It was the second match of this tournament in which Harry Kane did not score. England has many other players capable of scoring, but they need Harry Kane to step up!
