5 Things We learned about week 3 In College Football
5) Is it time to say goodbye to Clay Helton?
USC was trailing Stanford 35-13 going into the 4th quarter Saturday night before losing, 42-28. The Trojan faithful left the stadium early. USC played an unmotivated, lethargic game at home. USC used to be a national powerhouse. That is no longer the case. In 2020 Helton had the No.64 ranked recruiting class in the country. It is time to make a change. He is not attracting players from across the country.
4) It is not even close between Iowa and Iowa State:
For the past 2 seasons, I have been screaming to anyone who will listen. Iowa is a better program and Kirk Ferentz is a better coach than Iowa State’s Matt Campbell. Iowa dominated from start to finish, defeating the Cyclones 27-17. The Hawkeyes have won 8 straight games including 5 straight wins against ranked teams. Iowa has also won 6 in a row against Iowa State. The last time they won six straight in the series was when it won 15 in a row from 1983-97. This is not a rivalry; it is a big brother beating up on little brother.
3) Can we take the Miami Hurricanes seriously?
Floridians were confident all off-season that the Miami Hurricanes could pull the upset and beat #1 ranked Alabama. That dream became a nightmare as Miami lost to the Crimson Tide, 44-13. On Saturday the Canes struggled to beat Appalachian State, 25-23. If Miami is the No.22 ranked team in the country, college football is in trouble.
2) Texas A&M wins with defense:
When we think of Jimbo Fisher’s team we think of offense. That did not happen on Saturday. The #5 ranked Aggies defeated Colorado 10-7. Texas A&M held the Buffalos to 260 total yards on offense. Are the Aggies a legitimate threat to win the SEC this year? I do not think so. They will not be a top 10 team by the end of the season.
1) Here come the Oregon Ducks:
No.12 ranked Oregon went into Columbus Ohio and led from start to finish. The Ducks upset No.3 Ohio State, 35-28. CJ Vardell had 23 touches 195 total yards and 3 touchdowns. Oregon’s team speed was apparent on both sides of the ball. Their defense and offense made enough plays to upset the Buckeyes. This Oregon team should win the PAC-12 and could get an invite to the College Football Final Four. Mario Cristobal has had a top 20, top 15, and top 7 recruiting class in his first three seasons as the Oregon Coach.
