Saturday, September 4th, 2021 was dubbed as the best regular-season schedule in college football history. There were a ton of top 25 matchups.
5 Things We Learned About Week 2 in College Football:
5) Can we stop with pre-season rankings:
There should be no rankings till after the 4th game of the season. This week had a ton of ranked teams lose.
- #20 Washington lost to Montana, 13-7
- #17 Indiana got embarrassed by #18 Iowa, 34-6.
- #19 Penn State defeated #12 Wisconsin, 16-10.
- #16 LSU got dominated by UCLA, 38-27.
- #3 Clemson lost to #5 Georgia, 10-3.
- Virginia Tech upset #10 North Carolina, 17-10.
Stop ranking teams before they play games.
4) Terrible performance by #14 Miami:
#14 Miami was trailing #1 Alabama 27-3 at halftime. Bryce Young was 27-38, threw for 344 passing yards, and had 4 touchdowns. Miami had high hopes coming into this game, but it was over after 30 minutes. Alabama hit them with a knockout punch early and The Hurricanes never go off the canvas. If Miami is the number #14 college football team in the country, college football is in trouble.
3) Chip Kelly leads UCLA over #16 LSU:
UCLA dominated the #16 LSU Tigers, 38-27. Chip Kelly’s team rushed for 210 yards. They controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. The Bruins defense only gave up 49 rushing yards. It was an impressive victory For UCLA. On the flip side, LSU is in trouble. If UCLA can dominate them on the line of scrimmage, what will a team like Georgia, Alabama, or an SEC opponent do to them?
2) Is this Georgia’s Year?:
Kirby Smart’s #5 Georgia Bulldogs upset #3 Clemson, 10-3. The Bulldogs held Clemson to 2 yards rushing and sacked D.J Uiagalelei seven times. Uiagalelei entered the game as a Heisman Trophy Candidate was 19-37, for 178 Yards and 1 interception. The Georgia defense made him look like an inexperienced quarterback. If Georgia can find some offense, they can contend for a National Championship.
1) Oklahoma survives a scare:
Oklahoma Head Coach, Lincoln Riley, is known as the Quarterback Whisperer. In the past, Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray won the Heisman Trophy Award. Jalen Hurts was a finalist 2 seasons ago. Riley’s offense can score points against any team in the country. On Saturday, Oklahoma was outscored by Tulane, 21-3 in the second half before winning, 40-35. Riley refuses to evolve. The only thing that has stopped him from winning a national title is his terrible defense, year after year.
Bonus coverage:
#19 Penn State upset #12 Wisconsin in Madison, 16-20.
Kirk Ferentz of Iowa is the most underappreciated coach in College Football. The #18 Hawkeyes embarrassed #17 Indiana, 34-6.
It took the #11 Oregon Ducks 4 quarters to escape Fresno State, 31-24 at Home. The Ducks travel to Columbus to take on #3 Ohio State next weekend.
