The College Football Playoff’s board of managers voted to expand the CFP to 12 teams in 2026 but is encouraging the sport’s commissioners to try to implement it as soon as 2024. This new format will take away the importance of the regular season. We will see teams with 2 losses making the post-season. Until that time, every game matters for playoff positioning.
Top 5 Things We Learned About Week 5 In College Football:
5) The Oregon Ducks are not ready for primetime:
The No.11 Ducks battled the No.3 Georgia Bulldogs in the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff game. Georgia won 49-3 but it was not even that close. Bo Nix threw 2 interceptions in the first half and the Bulldogs led at halftime, 28-3. They outscored Oregon 21-0 in the 2nd half. If Nix is the answer at the quarterback position, they better change the question. Dan Lanning is in his first year as the coach of the Ducks. It is going to be a long rebuilding process and they have miles to go before they are a top 20 team.
4) Florida upsets #7 Utah:
From 2013-2016 Billy Napier was the wide receiver coach for Nick Saban at Alabama. From 2018-2021 he was the head coach at the University of Louisiana.
Record with the Rajin’ Cajuns:
2018:7-7
2019: 11-3
2020: 10-1
2021: 12-1
Florida new head coach had a huge upset win against the #7 Utah Utes, 29-26. Did the Gators make the perfect hire for their football team? It appears so.
3) Brian Kelly will be fine at LSU:
The LSU Tigers lost to the Florida State Seminoles, 24-23 Sunday night at the Ceasar’s Superdome in New Orleans. FSU blocked an extra point with no time left to secure the victory. Going into this season, Brian Kelly had 166 wins and 63 losses as a head coach. The Tigers had two punts fumbled and two blocked kicks and were still right there at the end. LSU… you will be fine under Kelly’s watch, and they should be a top 10 team by next season. He wins everywhere he goes.
2) Can we give some credit to the Arkansas Razorbacks:
From 2017-2019 the Razorbacks had a combined record of 1-23 in the SEC. Over the past two seasons, head coach Sam Pittman is building this team the right way. In his first year, he went 3-7 and in 2021 his team was 9-4 and won the Outback Bowl. This team could win 10 games this season. Put some respect on their names.
1) Somethings never change:
You can complain all you want about parody and making the playing field even in college football, but it is not happening. The two best teams in college football are still Georgia and Alabama. They will play for the SEC Championship, and they will both make it to the Final Four… Deal with it.
Parting shots:
- If Clemson is the #4 team in the nation, college football is having a down year. Dabo Swinney’s defense may be elite, but their offense will struggle to score points.
- The Pac-12 appears to be a soft conference. Lincoln Riley should be able to compete for the PAC-12 title for the next 5 years.
- #16 Miami destroyed Bethune-Cookman 70-13. Mario Cristobal is a great recruiter, but his offensive game planning will come back to haunt them in a big game.
