5 Things We Learned About College Football 9-18-21
5) The Many Diaz experiment should be over in Miami:
Last week I wrote, USC should part ways with head coach Clay Helton. They fired him on Monday. It is time for the Miami Hurricanes to follow USC. The Hurricanes lost to Michigan State at home,38-17. Miami was outscored 21-3 in the 4th quarter. Whatever Diaz is selling, his team is not buying. The Canes must move off him.
4) How good is Fresno State?
Fresno State opened their season with a 45-0 victory over Connecticut. They followed that up with a heartbreaking loss to the No.4 ranked Oregon Ducks. They beat Cal-Poly 63-10 in week 3. On Saturday night the Bulldogs went into No.13 UCLA and held on to win 40-37. This offense can score against any defense in the country. They are a legitimate Top 20 team.
3) White Out and a win for Penn State:
No.10 Penn State did just enough to beat No.22 Auburn 28-20. This is now considered by most to be the best environment in football. 109,958 fans all dressed in white, all waving white pom poms. James Franklin has done a tremendous job at Penn State. He could be heading to USC next year.
2) Is Iowa the best team in the Big-10?
The Hawkeyes do not get a lot of national media attention but maybe they should. Iowa has won 9 straight games and they have won 14 consecutive none conference games. That is the 2nd longest streak in college football. This team is well-coached and never beat themselves. Watch them over the next few weeks.
1) Roll Tide survives in the swamp:
In front of a raucous, 90,887 fans in Gainesville, The No.1 Alabama Crimson Tide defeated the No.11 Florida Gators, 31-29. Alabama led 21-3 and held on for the victory. Bryce Young was 22-35 for 233 yards and 3 touchdowns. This was a very impressive win for a Crimson Tide team that has lost a ton of players to the NFL over the past few years. Even though the Gators lost the game, they played well and are still alive to play for a National Championship.
Bonus Coverage:
Herman Edwards and Arizona State lost to BYU, 27-17. Edwards was 54-74 in the NFL and he is 11-11 in Conference play.
Michigan is 2-0. They play 3-0 Rutgers next week. If Jim Harbaugh loses to Rutgers, the Alumni could be calling for his job.
Cincinnati is the 8th ranked team in the country. That’s it, that is the sentence. 8th ranked team in the country.
