With the temps starting to drop a bit, and schools getting back in gear the return of college football is near. One place where college football is king is in Athens, Georgia. Memories are made between the hedges and this season is no different. After not making the 2024 CFB Playoffs the Dawgs look to get back to the Mountain top.
The 2024 theme is comeback year and play with a vengeance after a very disappointing end to the season last year. After losing a lot of defensive stars and losing All-American Tight End Brock Bowers to the Pros., This Georgia Bulldogs team is back and re-tooled with stars all over the field. Georgia is considered to be a favorite to win the national title this season and a lot of that has to do with the names they have returning this season.
They return the majority of their offensive line, headlined by star QB Carson Beck who is expected to be a top-5 draft pick in next year’s NFL Draft. Will he get caught up in his Heisman Trophy campaign, or stay level headed? Safety Malaki Starks, and defensive lineman Mykel Williams will also bring in some added toughness and a veteran presence to this team.
The Bulldogs also brought in solid bodies from the transfer portal. Most notably, they brought in running back Trevor Etienne from Florida who is expected to start and have a lead role as the main halfback for the unit. wide receiver Colbie Young and wide receiver London Humphreys both will get some major burns this season. One question that may concern Georgia is the toughness of their schedule.
They will have to make road trips to Ole Miss, Alabama, and Texas this season and all three are expected to be playoff contenders again this season. They also open the season against Clemson on a neutral site venue and play a home game against Tennessee late in the year which could become very interesting with Nico Iamaleava earning the starting quarterback job there.
Head coach Kirby Smart is well aware that all eyes are on him and his team, with the retirement of Nick Saban he is the SEC big dog. He is more than ready for it and still has a bad taste in his mouth from how 2023 ended. I see the biggest test being October 19th at Texas and that leaves them with at LEAST 11 wins. Am I crazy? What are your thoughts on the upcoming season? Let me know!
